2009 Race Report

The 2009 and, 41st edition of the Nonquon Canoe race was very successful with over 90 canoes and kayaks completing the course. The Nonquon River was running high so it was a quick trip out to the lake. However, it was a very tight squeeze under the bridge with about two feet of clearance. This required canoeists to get off their seats and onto the bottom of their boats and kayakers had to do their own gymnastics. At least one boat tipped trying to make the squeeze. It is not a huge risk but all paddlers should be reminded that there are drain pipes the hang down under the bridge so a bit of caution is required.

Out on to the Lake Scugog portion of the race, there was a steady crosswind that slowed the racers down. Luckily there were not too many weeds this year so the best choice was to stay close to the shore.

Organizers put a lot of effort into this event and as usual the army of volunteers from Port Perry and members of the Lake Scugog Historical Society were out in force, ensuring a great event. This is not a race to be missed.
