Race day dawned clear and calm in contrast to last year's howling wind and rain. There was a mass start with the rec boats positioning behind the 10K racers. The Bohms in the kayaks were the class of the field as they leapt off the line. Darryl set the pace with Aurora drafting along behind him. Dave Johnston and Rene Boogermans pulled away from the rest of the C2 field early and as it turned out they were uncatchable and held a comfortable margin over the pack for the rest of the race.
The race course on the upper section proved ideal for drafting and a pack of three for four canoes and Don Nelles in the third kayak formed up. The first turn in the lower section separated the pack as Bob and Gwyn popped up in the shallows on a tight turn and gained a couple of boat lengths on the pack which strung out heading for the short cut. The Bohm kayaks, Dave and Rene were out of sight around the meanders heading for the buoy turn when
the pack reached the second short cut which is a tough current with an obstructing tree. The canoes hit the target and shot through in single file.
The current then enters the main current again and one paddler was tossed out of the back of the canoe with his bowman carrying on downstream. It was Adams first race in the bow of a C2 and the loss of the stern paddler created some consternation for him but he managed to get the old guy reorganised in an eddy above the rapids and they proceeded downstream madly chasing the rest of the boats around the buoy turn and finally catching Don Stoneman and Mike Kennedy tangled in the weeds on the upstream negotiation of the shortcut. This left the only close battles on the river to the two kayaks in the lead and the mixed teams of Bob and Gwyn/ Allyson and Stan.
Dave and Rene had the men's C2 race sewn up and in the bag. The Bohms played "no you go first" over the line and the timers had to make a tough decision. Fortunately the prizes were all in the family anyway. Dave and Rene crossed soon after. The C2 mixed team finish was a tight sprint at the end of a tough upstream haul. Stan and Allyson pushed Bob and Gwyn to the end after catching them and playing bumper boats in the final rapid.
The race was over by 11:30 and everyone came back to the Tait's where Steve could change into dry clothes after unofficially winning the 10 meter swimming competition. We ate some food, had a few laughs and handed out the prizes with the help of "Hunter the timer" (Thanks to his Mom, too).
Thanks to everyone who attended and helped out including the Twit brothers
for grooming the race course. Hope to see more craft next year.
